Excursions in the Ahrntal Valley –10 tips from the Obermairhof
From your holiday apartment in St. Jakob to the gondola, museums, castle and alpine huts in minutes – with driving times from the farm.
The Ahrntal valley is also called the “valley of 80 three-thousand-metre peaks”, and St. Jakob lies right in the middle of it. From the Obermairhof you reach the Klausberg ski area in 4 km, the head of the valley at Kasern in a quarter of an hour and Bruneck in 40 minutes. Here are our ten tips for summer and winter, with driving times from the farm so you can plan your day. For the right tour, just ask us – we are happy to recommend child-friendly routes.
Gondola, alpine huts and nature parkHiking and skiing from St. Jakob

Klausberg ski area, Steinhaus
In summer the gondola takes you to hikes to the Klaussee lake at 2,162 m, the Breite Rast at 2,098 m or, for sporty families, up to the Bärental and Hochfeld at 2,296 m. In winter Klausberg is our ski area: Klausberg ski school (Franz Duregger, Tanja’s father, is a ski and snowboard instructor there), the “Funtaklaus” snowpark, night tobogganing and rentals at Skihaus Sporting. Easy walks
Hollenzalm and Wollbachalm
Our tips for families with younger children: easy hiking routes with refreshment stops at the Hollenzalm and Wollbachalm huts. The climb from the Obermairhof is minimal, as St. Jakob already lies at a considerable altitude.

In Kasern, the last village in the Ahrntal, you find the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park centre – the starting point for hikes in the nature park at the head of the valley.

The South Tyrol Mining Museum in the Kornkasten of Steinhaus tells the story of mining in the Ahrntal – an exciting destination for the whole family, even in the rain.

The Obermairhof
Sometimes the best excursion is the barn: feeding and petting the animals, watching the milking, tasting farm products such as eggs, milk, cheese and butter. In summer our animals graze on our own alpine pasture in the Krimmler Achental in Austria.
